I Stood Up.

What my body did...when I stood up:

We talk about finding ourselves, usually in terms of attending retreats, or a trip, maybe through intense meditation, or therapy. We all have our different techniques or avenues, with varying degrees of success. My avenue has been to combine body with mind, internal with external, feeling with my beloved words ... and lately, yoga with Lauren!

After a year of work together, the results have been transformative. A few weeks ago, with Lauren positioned behind me for support, we stood up together from a bench - verrry slowly. Together, I struggled to use only the leg muscles designed for the purpose, while following Lauren's guidance for what the rest of my body should be doing. Together, we felt the impact.

It is both a tiny - and yet momentous - thing to do, to get to my feet in the way my body was meant to after 27 years of RA changing everything about how I move, sometimes in ways I don't even realize…to gently remind my entire system how it was designed to physically function, within the present reality that is my body with RA.

I felt as if I had more internal structure to support me -emotional tensegrity within physical tensegrity - as I moved out into the world.

I noticed later that something else had happened. At the moment I stood up, an emotional body within my body inflated, like one of those mouse-ear balloon-within-a-balloons at Disneyland. I felt like I had found myself, that I was more of myself. I felt as if I had more internal structure to support me - emotional tensegrity within physical tensegrity - as I moved out into the world. Which is what I want more than anything – to move out into the world.

And that’s what my body did when I stood up….the me I found inside me stood up, too.
